Dying to heal: a neglected aspect of NDEs.

چکیده
1834), the English Romantic poet, wrote, “If a man could pass through Paradise in a dream, and have a flower presented to him as a pledge that his soul had really been there, and if he found that flower in his hand when he [awakes]—Aye, what then?” Coleridge’s scenario is not hypothetical. On the edge of death, millions of people have passed through what seems to them a paradise. This phenomenon has been known as a near-death experience, or NDE, since psychiatrist Raymond Moody’s 1975 book Life After Life sparked a revolution in popular attitudes toward the afterlife. On recovering, most NDEers report being awed by an idyllic experience of intense peace and joy. And they awaken from their paradisiacal passage with reminders that are far more meaningful than Coleridge’s flower in the hand. These tokens of paradise involve permanent lifechanging perceptions and behaviors such as the absence of the fear of death, a greater appreciation for the preciousness of life, higher self-esteem, greater love and compassion for others, a heightened sense of meaning and purpose, a desire to learn, elevated spirituality, greater ecological sensitivity and planetary concern, being

Near-Death Experiences Precipitated by Suicide Attempt: Lack of Influence of Psychopathology, Religion, and Expectations
Near-death experiences (NDEs), transcendental or mystical events experienced on the threshold of death, have been speculated to arise from psychopathology or from pre-existing expectations of the dying process, although such speculations have never been tested. Sixty-one consecutive suicide attempters were interviewed in this empirical study of persons who would be expected to have a high rate ...
متن کاملReflections on the Context of Near - Death Experiences
^Near-death experiences (NDEs) constitute a particular type of experience that occurs in near-death states and is familiar to many. Yet, there are other kinds of lesser-known experiences reported from near-death states that appear to form an interconnected continuum with NDEs. Because the relations between these different experiences have not received much attention in the more recent literatur...

Ð One of the main reasons that near-death experiences have generated so much interest in recent years among the general public is because they seem to provide evidence that consciousness survives the death of the physical body. It is puzzling, therefore, that most researchers Ð both those interested in NDEs and those interested in survival research Ð have neglected to address the question of wh...
متن کاملNear-death experiences between science and prejudice
Science exists to refute dogmas; nevertheless, dogmas may be introduced when undemonstrated scientific axioms lead us to reject facts incompatible with them. Several studies have proposed psychobiological interpretations of near-death experiences (NDEs), claiming that NDEs are a mere byproduct of brain functions gone awry; however, relevant facts incompatible with the ruling physicalist and red...

The nature of human consciousness and its neuroanatomical correlates is one of the most profound issues in the field of neuroscience today. Recently, Graziano and Kastner (2011) put forward the intriguing idea that consciousness is a perception, processed by the same neural network which is involved in social perception. The authors provided a number of interesting lines of evidence to support ...
